Just in time for the weekly foldable discussion!
What all is there to know, isn’t it just going to be basically the oppo fold but with OnePlus software?
Compared to Google, I think the SOC that will make it stand apart from the Pixel Fold. The Tensor 2 chip was still based on Exynos, so having the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will put it up against Samsung almost immediately.
Compared to Samsung, it will likely come down to a boring iteration with relatively dependable QC vs a device pushing the boundaries of the genre with potentially less dependable QC.
I do think the Open could become the Foldable for ROM junkies. I think that market will prefer the SD over the Tensor.
I mean yeah but roms on a OnePlus are a given and OnePlus phones are basically just oppo phones - we already know about the oppo fold, this is just an oppo find n2 with the gen 2 instead of gen 1, I just really don’t see what else there is to know.
It’s likely getting delayed: https://www.xda-developers.com/oneplus-open-reportedly-delayed/
According to journalist Max Jambor, who earlier claimed that OnePlus Open will release in late August, the company’s first foldable phone will now face a delay in launch. OnePlus was reportedly not happy with the performance of the display provided by Chinese company BOE, resulting in the delay in launch. The company is now testing the OnePlus Open with display panels from Samsung, which, per Jambor, managed to meet the company’s expectations. Simply put, the delay in launch is for a good reason.
A Samsung display could put this device in Samsung/Apple tier territory real quick if they price it right and at least match Samsung on software updates.
The Open is quickly becoming what the Pixel Fold should have been.
